Summer Sunglasses Style Guide
We have officially entered the final month of summer, and I still have my H&M $9.99 sunglasses from April. This is a huge accomplishment! In prior years, I was on my 15th pair because I lost the glasses, smashed them, scratched them or my favorite…eaten in the death grip of my dog. Needless to say, after one summer of cheap sunglasses and mishaps, I had spent a pretty penny on my sunnies. I could never fathom buying expensive glasses because that summer total would be the same as a nice vacation. 🙂
After a successful 129 days, I am ready to buy my first pair of expensive glasses. Thankfully, Stitch Fix posted about this very topic to help guide me in my decision. Currently, I own a pair of every style listed below because when they are cheap, why not try them all! What style do you think I should buy?
Modern Minimalism
You love to wear:
- Clean lines
- Neutral color palettes (like black, navy, creams and tan)
- Simple prints & patterns (like plaid!)
- You prefer effortlessly cool over complexity
You Should Try: An Aviator Frame
Characterized by dark lenses and very thin metal frames that hook behind the ears, these frames were first popularized after World War II when they were worn by pilots. These shades exude a bad girl meets modern style that is both timeless and flattering on a variety of face shapes
Cali Cool
You Love To Wear:
- Denim—it’s a must!
- Bright colors every now & then
- Boho accents
- Flirty, skin-baring styles
You Should Try: A Cat-Eye Frame
These retro throwback shades scream ‘50s chic and weekend getaways to Palm Springs (sign us up!). Look for a cat-eye frame to top off your California (read: insouciantly cool) everyday outfits. Do you have a round face? Try a sleek cat-eye frame to bring contrast to your face’s natural curves.
Playful Prepster
You Love To Wear:
- Blue & white is your dominant color palette
- Wardrobe classics
- Crisp & polished separates
- An occasional print—like stripes, dots or anchors!
You Should Try: A Wayfarer Frame
These thick, plastic frames are durable & practical, perfect for afternoon sailing, horse race watching or trips through the carpool lane. They come in a variety of colors—try one in a fun hue for summer! Looking to invest in a pair? Stick with a neutral like black or tortoise shell for a lighter feel.
Trendsetter
You Love To Wear:
- Tailored silhouettes
- Mixed prints (you live in stripes + leopard)
- On-trend accessories—you’ll try anything!
- The latest styles without being over-the-top
You Should Try: A Tortoise Frame
Add an extra pop of “print” to your outfit with speckled black & brown frames. This unique coloring is flattering for all skin tones and will complete any casual look. Try them in a brow-grazing silhouette for a sophisticated, street style feel.
Bohemian Babe
You Love To Wear:
- ‘70s color palettes
- Flowy, feminine styles
- Global-inspired prints
- Exaggerated silhouettes
You Should Try: A Round Frame
What goes around, comes a-round—including trends! Channel your inner free spirit with circular frames—the oversized lenses not only provide lots of sun protection, they make a major statement. You can find an affordable pair in a variety of stores—meaning you can test the waters before diving into this retro style. These frames are especially great for a square face or angular jawline—this shape will soften the sharpness and balance your angles.
