Opera Theatre of St. Louis
Last week, Brad and I had a fantastic date night courtesy of Opera Theatre of St. Louis. We called this date night new age adulting because we were selected for the free tweet seats! The night was magical and even started with a charming picnic.
As this was my first time at the Opera Theatre of St. Louis, I was not sure what would be in store for us. What type of people attend the opera? What do they wear? Are Brad and I even adult enough to enjoy the opera?
When I am nervous on fitting in, I always go with my favorite LBD, comfy pair of shoes and a statement piece. When we arrived, I was shocked. There was a variety of ages and attire all looking to have a fun night out. Brad and I fit right in. My nerves and notions of an opera faded away, and I was looking forward to learning what attending the Opera Theatre of St. Louis was all about.
I highly suggest making it a night out and making dinner in the garden before the Opera. It is the perfect way to start your cultural night out. There are two options for dinner before your breathtaking shows.
- Pack a picnic & grab a bottle of wine in the garden. For those who do not love wine like me, the cash bar has themed mix drinks and a wide variety of beer. Brad and I grabbed a bottle of Cabernet to accompany our Jimmy Johns sandwiches as we enjoyed the cool breeze under the charming striped tent with chandeliers hanging from the center bar.
- Buy tickets for the Young Friends of the Opera Theatre of St. Louis pre-show dinner reception and open bar. Next time, Brad and I will be doing this. Not every show has the dinner prior so you will need to plan your date night a little in advance. The pre-show dinner is located in the beautiful garden and the meal look scrumptious! Get your date night tickets for only $79.
After dinner, we headed in for our first experience at Opera Theatre of St. Louis, La bohème. La bohème is one of the most performed operas of all time and has gripped audiences for over a century. Rodolfo and his friends scrape by as bohemian artists, using their wit and charm to escape life’s harsher consequences. Rodolfo can’t imagine how love will change him until he encounters a beautiful dressmaker, Mimì. Set to lush, irresistible music, Puccini’s masterpiece never fails to move audiences to both laughter and tears.
The talent on stage was nothing short of world-class. The cast gave me chills as their voices filled the room with their passion, range and depth. I even got goosebumps and a bit teary eyed as Rodolfo and Mimì professed their love to one another. Don’t worry; the show is filled with a few laughs and comically scenes that had the entire audience giggling with glee.
On the way home, Brad and I gushed over what fantastic night it was and how wrong my expectations were. Opera Theatre of St. Louis makes a great night for any age. I highly suggest you check it out on your next date night. You will be delighted by the outdoor garden and blown away by the talent on stage. No matter who you are or what life stage you are in, you will end your night grateful for the new experience!
