Midwestern Mediterranean Diet
Midwestern Mediterranean Diet smashes my Midwestern lifestyle and the traditional Mediterranean diet together.
The Mediterranean diet is established on the traditional foods that people used to eat in countries like Italy and Greece back in the year 1960.
You may be thinking what is the midwestern mediterranean diet? The midwest by nature does not have surrounding water & it is 2018. You are completely right, but keep reading to learn how you can live the mediterranean diet in the midwest.
The midwestern mediterranean diet gives you great guidelines to living a healthier lifestyle. What I love most is the mediterranean diet can be flexible for your physical location, budget and time.
For me, that would be Missouri, middle class and short on time…
The Mediterranean diet emphasizes:
- Eat primarily plant-based foods, such as fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes and nuts
- Learn to love olive oil
- Flavor food with herbs and spices and dish the salt
- Limit red meat to no more than a few times a month
- Enjoy fish and poultry at least twice a week
- Invite family and friends over for meals and laugh often
- Drinking red wine in moderation (optional)
- Getting plenty of exercise
The benefits of embracing the Mediterranean diet:
Mayo Clinic among many other health organizations are promoting the health benefits of switching to this diet. People by far smarter than I have discovered reduced risk of:
- heart disease
- incidence of cancer (including breast cancer)
- Parkinson’s disease
- Alzheimer’s disease

I take no credit of discovering the Mediterranean Diet nor trying to fit it into my midwestern lifestyle. My lovely husband was the one who brought up the topic and even cooked the first few meals.
